Decades Downtown

and They're
Still At It!

"What keeps those
downtown preachers going, anyway?"

They keep going back because of the call of God in their lives. They're not being paid to be there. They have jobs, families and responsibilities they have to take care of. But God has put a burden in their hearts for you, the people of Syracuse and Central New York. He has required of them that they preach the Gospel, the good news of the love of Jesus Christ to you, the passerby, so that you can choose between an eternity with Christ or an eternity without Christ.

"But why do they have to preach?

Why can't they just pray for us?"

Because prayer alone isn't enough. The Bible says: "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Rom. 10:17). And how do you get to hear the Word of God? By those who are sent. You see, all men need to personally call upon the Lord in order to be saved. But... "How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent?..." (Rom. 10:14-15).

These men have been sent to the street corners by the Lord Jesus Christ. He is trying to tell you, through them, to repent, turn around, do an about-face. Stop living the way you're living without the Lord as your Master, and begin a new life in Christ, putting everything in His hands. Not in man's hands, not in a church's hands, nor in the street preacher's hands, but in the Lord's hands. He loves you very much and wants to give you life more abundantly — not only in eternity, but now in this lifetime as well.

We are living in the Biblical period known as the "last days." Jesus Christ is coming to earth again just as He said: "And if I go... I will come again..." (John 14:3). When He comes, it will be a day of reckoning for all the people of the world. Christ taught in a parable: "After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them." (Mat. 25:19). The street preachers' earnest desire is for you to be prepared for judgment — it is a motivation of love that God has instilled in them.

If you want to know more about why you need to be saved and how you can make peace with God, just ask one of these preachers. He'll be more than happy to answer your questions.

You're also invited to attend one of our church meetings — another way you can learn more about the will of God for you. We meet Wednesday, Friday and Sunday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. Come visit us at The Church of the Living Word, 5963 Court Street Road, Syracuse, N.Y.
