Downtown
Preachers
'How then shall they call on him in whom they have
not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom
they have not heard? And how shall they hear without
a preacher?' (Romans 10:14)
On the corner of Fayette and Salina Streets, in Syracuse,
Jesus Christ is imploring men and women to be reconciled
to God (2 Corinthians 5:20), right here in our own community,
through dedicated brethren from the Living Word Church,
as they preach the Word of God and hand out Bible tracts.
This ministry began in 1973 with a Gospel outreach
on Marshall Street in the Syracuse University area.
Presently, the downtown preachers are out weekly in
all kinds of weather, heralding the Salvation message
to passersby and those waiting for buses. Public preaching
on the streets has been done periodically throughout
the history of Syracuse, starting as long ago as the
late 19th Century.
Street preaching is not only exciting and challenging,
but it takes a sovereign call and grace from God to
do it, and do it right. It's a lively ministry for sure...
to walk out to that Salina Street curbside and face
a crowd of people, 99 percent of whom you don't even
know, and PREACH to them!
Each of these brethren is very aware of his responsibility
to the Lord to deliver the Salvation message - repentance
and turning to the Savior, Jesus Christ. With the acceptance
of the free gift of Salvation comes the promise that
"God setteth the solitary in families: He bringeth out
those which are bound with chains..." (Psalm 68:6).
We have come to know some new brethren in our assembly
over the years as a result of this ministry.
