Our
Father's Business
Even as a boy, at the age of 12, Jesus Christ knew
"that I must be about my Father's business..."
(Luke 2:49). When the religious establishment found
fault with Christ for healing a cripple, who then carried
his bed on the Sabbath day, Christ replied, "My
Father worketh hitherto and I work" (John 5:17).
He also said, "I must work the works of Him that
sent Me, while it is day..." (John 9:4). Of all
the parables Jesus Christ gave, most have to do with
work of one kind or another.
Is Jesus Christ still working today, and if so, what
is He doing? The answer is found in something He said
while still here on earth, "...I will build My
church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against
it" (Matthew 16:18). Our Lord is definitely not
on vacation; His business today and throughout the Church
age is to build up, strengthen, edify His Church, and
to jealously protect it from the onslaught of evil pouring
forth from the gates of hell. Throughout this booklet
we have introduced you to the varied ministries and
some of the people of the Church of the Living Word.
Hopefully, our goals have become evident from the things
on which we do and do not put emphasis.
For one thing, you haven't read about "fund raising
activities." You won't see appeals for your money
on our TV broadcast or monetary solicitations from our
publication department. In fact, a basket is never passed
at any service.
Nor do we have "support groups" for every
addictive behavior and grievous circumstance in life.
Christ sets men free from sin, and His Body, the Church,
functions as a whole in ministering to the emotional
and practical needs of its members. (Romans 6:1-4; 1
Corinthians 12:25-26) Living Word Church is not a promotional
"booking agency" for rock concerts, magic
shows, and other acts on the entertainment circuit.
Our fellowship is not a "political staging ground"
for social activism and bids for public office. Christ
told Pontius Pilate, "My kingdom is not of this
world; if My kingdom were of this world, then would
my servants fight..." (John 18:36).
Folks don't come to Living Word because of a promise
to "get rich quick" or "have a good time".
What we are is a local Christian Church, working together
to know and to do God's will for our lives, nothing
more and nothing less. And we're in it for the long
haul - until He returns again in Glory. We don't believe
in working for our salvation; but we certainly believe
in working it out. (Ephesians 2:8-9; Philippians 2:12)
